Homemade MEAD

Before we see what ingredients I used to prepare this homemade MEAD, let’s understand what it is.

Homemade Mead is an ancient and legendary alcoholic beverage, often associated with Norse mythology and Viking culture. It is made through the fermentation of honey, water, and yeast, and sometimes flavored with spices, herbs, or fruit. This beverage is known for its sweetness derived from honey and its distinctive character, which varies depending on the type of honey used and the fermentation techniques employed. Mead has a long history dating back thousands of years and has been appreciated in many cultures around the world. Today, homemade mead is experiencing a resurgence in the community of craft beer and fermented beverage enthusiasts, who appreciate its unique taste and its connection to ancient traditions.

Since the main ingredient is honey, practically you can have fun making homemade mead almost anywhere, this time you have no excuses 😉.

INGREDIENTS

For this homemade mead, I also used some dried raisins, but you can use your preferred dried fruit.

HONEY           1 kg

WATER        3.5 liters

RAISINS     200 g

YEAST             1 teaspoon

INSTRUCTIONS

Since it’s a homemade mead, you can also vary the technique according to your taste and equipment.

For example, I directly added water and dried fruit to my DIY fermenter.

Two hours later, once the fruit had rehydrated, I added the honey and gave it a good mix. When the honey dissolved in the water, I added the yeast.

Once the fermenter was sealed with the airlock on top, all that was left to do was wait.

After a month, my homemade mead was ready 🤪. I then bottled it, and after two weeks, I did the tasting 😉. It was spectacular !

This other recipe I made years ago, and I used only honey without the fruit.
