SNAKE and CROCODILE MEAT

If there’s one thing that world cuisine teaches us, it’s that there’s no limit to the variety of flavors and dishes we can discover. In fact, the more I travel, the more I realize that almost anything can be eaten – not only snake and crocodile meat, but as I show in this short video below 😬, from python to rats, and even bats. Unfortunately, in several countries, our faithful four-legged friends, dogs and cats, are also consumed 😢.

One of the most adventurous and intriguing experiences for food enthusiasts is tasting exotic meats, among which snake and crocodile meat stand out. These foods, appreciated for their unique texture and distinctive flavor, are an integral part of the gastronomy of various cultures worldwide, as seen here in Indonesia, North Sulawesi.

SNAKE MEAT

Snake meat has been a source of sustenance and an important element of cuisine in many parts of the world, including Asia, Africa, and Latin America. In many cultures, snake is considered a culinary delicacy, appreciated for its delicate flavor and tender texture, although if not cut into very small pieces, it can be a bit chewy in my opinion. Countries like China, Vietnam, Thailand, and Indonesia boast a long tradition of using snake meat in cooking, where it is prepared in a variety of ways, from soups to fried dishes; here in Manado, North Sulawesi, it’s often covered with a lot of chili 🌶️.

The farming of snakes for food consumption is a widespread practice in many regions of Asia, where they are usually raised on specialized farms. In these places, snakes are raised in controlled conditions and fed with a proper diet to ensure the quality of the meat, although in many traditional markets, you can find snakes grown in the wild like this python that I used for the Fried Python video recipe.

In this video, you can see how to remove the skin and debone a snake, more precisely a python.

CROCODILE MEAT

Crocodile is another animal whose meat is appreciated in various parts of the world, particularly in Africa, Australia, and some regions of America. Crocodile meat is known for its texture similar to that of fish and slightly sweet flavor. It is often compared to chicken or swordfish and can be cooked in a variety of ways, including roasting, grilling, and stewing. As you can see in the video below, I cooked and ate crocodile meat in Thailand.

Crocodile farming for meat is a widespread practice in some parts of the world, particularly in Australia and the United States. Here, crocodiles are raised on large specialized farms, where they are kept in controlled conditions and fed a balanced diet to ensure the quality of the meat.

In Thailand, there are various farms, more for tourists 😂 where you can see crocodiles and even buy the eggs that I used in this other video.

Too bad the eggs weren’t fresh and I couldn’t eat them 😬, I’ll have to try again 😉.
