Today, we’re making CANDIED GINGER: an easy and quick recipe to enjoy with our afternoon tea or with a hot chocolate on a cold winter day, or in front of the TV with our favorite movie.
If you would like to surprise your friends with your generosity, packaged a beautiful glass jar full of candied ginger, it’s a great gift made with heart and hands. They will surely appreciate it. Here’s the recipe to make it.
INGREDIENTS:
GINGER | 500 g |
SUGAR | 500 g |
SALT | 1 teaspoon |
WATER |
INSTRUCTIONS:
Peel the ginger using a knife or possibly a spoon (if you want to involve your kids).
Once properly peeled, slice it thinly and after placing it in a pot, cover it with water, add a teaspoon of salt, and simmer for about 45/50 minutes.
Drain the ginger, wait for about ten minutes, and weigh it. In a pot, put back the ginger now boiled, the amount of sugar equal to the weight of the ginger + 1 extra tablespoon of sugar (in my case, as you can see in the video recipe of candied ginger, the weight of the ginger after boiling is about 421 g. So, I used 420 g of sugar + an extra tablespoon). Stir, add a glass of water, and stir again. Place the pot on the lowest heat for about an hour. Remember to stir occasionally, especially in the last 15 minutes when the water has evaporated… we certainly don’t want to burn everything 🙂
At the end of the 60 minutes, we can proceed in 2 ways:
1) WITH SUGAR: using a skewer or a toothpick, take the pieces of ginger and dip them in a bowl with sugar. Turn them and then place them on a plate.
2) WITHOUT SUGAR: using a skewer or a toothpick, place the pieces of ginger on a tray covered with parchment paper or oiled paper.
Wait a few hours, and our candied ginger is ready to be devoured or packaged.
TIPS:
If you want, you can replace granulated sugar with brown sugar.
You can consume the residual water after boiling the ginger as herbal tea.
